A Message from Pastor Gary – January

The calendar is about to roll over again. “Time like an ever-rolling stream bears all our years away.” (Isaac Watts) Time is relentless and as the years go on, we realize that we are not.

We wake up in the morning and ask the question, what am I working with today? The hip, the knee, the shoulder, and the back are all susceptible to failing. That’s just the orthopedic failures that we can experience. Even more, how many heart beats do I have left? How many breaths do I have left? Will my memory and focus fail me to the point of my demise?

I know this sounds morbid, more so to younger people than to those of us who have many decades behind us. It sounds less morbid to those of us who know that the best years of our lives are behind us.

“Each winter as the year grows older, we each grow older too. The chill set in a little colder; the verities we knew seem shaken and untrue.” (Willam Gay)

As Psalm 23 indicates, we live in the shadow of death.

But could it be possible for the believer that the best is yet to come?

Could it be possible that the shadow of death will give way to a brilliant ray of light? Christ is our light.

“Longing for light, we wait in darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people, light for the world to see.”

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Christ be our light! Shine in your church gathered today.” (Bernadette Farrell)
